December 2011
To all readers have a safe and happy Xmas.
It's been an interesting year and quite busy, well for me anyway and the little time I have for this part time interest. Although not much has changed in dod:s, other games I play have, hence dodbits.com is not all about dod anymore. CSS has undergone some changes, the big one for me was the crosshairs, finally the Devs took steps to correct it's obvious failings... you just could not see it on some displays and situations.
The current Mini Map-radar issue for dods and CSS is a bad slip by the Devs, that is one area of the player HUD you never want to have wrong, although no one mentions it much as a tactical tool, if you really look hard enough the "overview" map when set up correctly can help your game.
TF2... the game is obviously a good one, the whole hats thing is over my head, (pardon the pun) I just don't get quite a few parts of TF2, hence why info' on it is very rare around here.
Ham and Jam still continues to be developed, the devs are few and good on them for not releasing, it was the correct call not to release at a time that the game was not ready and other games like Red Orchestra 2 are realising.
Very sad to hear of the passing of a young H&J dev team member Mitchell Curtis Keesee (Engineer).
Jed was hinting to release this year, time is always an issue and we may have to wait some more yet... no problem here, take all you need H&J, relax and enjoy life :) Gotta love what Jed said here. By the way, if you have not done so donate to the site, right side of the main page, these endeavours are not cheap and you can help by dropping in some spare change.
Say safe and relax

News November 2011
Nov 14 : INsanes dods GUI and HUD released today. See here for all info.
Nov 4 : New dods maps added
The C.O.C.K maps section has some new downloads. Mostly these are some Orange/small textured maps that someone made and had bad spawn protection, they we remade and various things added, mostly spawn protection. In most cases the author is unknown but the map was good enough to get a fix.
There is another section for some early maps I made, they are 2nd class but they are good enough to throw on for a laugh and a change of pace.
You will not find these maps anywhere else... exclusive to dodbits!
dodbits site upgrade complete
The move is now complete and I have been adding more content. The dods downloads are all there now, mappers models, HUD's...the bloody lot mate!
The CSS section has a huge revamp, just like dods it now has a HUD tutorial, this one takes you from the absolute beginning to a basic simple blue HUD that has a font change as well. It is a basic tutorial to start with but don't worry much more will be added, Team Menus, spec' and buy screens, I will eventually cover every part including the GUI.
The upgrade was hard work by the way, for now I am satisfied with dodbits, the downloads, the CSS section. I do have to press on with dods HUDs, that's is next.
News October 2011 Update:
dodbits site upgrade in progress!
All stuff being moved manually right now. If you see something missing I am moving it. Old site is http://www.dodbits.com/dod/ if you need to view it, I will keep it there for a while but it will be deleted by December 2011.
Webmaster (INsane) dodbits.com
| dodbits History | CSS on dodbits | New dods map by Punishment is out now! |
Work, work, work, work, work. Day job is ripping all my time at the moment...however, I still managed to learn a bit more about maintaining a website and some other boring stuff. You will notice the look has changed, sorry about the ads but they are actually helping me pay for this site.
dodbits has been around since 2005, the Internet archive has a snapshot of Feb 4 2006, timeline is here just pick a day, some of the old site still works (files are still on my webspace even downloads) and some links even go back to the old dod forums. Nostalgia!
I started it out of desperation from an ISP plan... not love of the game?
I bought some webspace to gain access to extra emails, my long term Australian ISP Telstra were charging AUD$2.00 (per address) if you wanted extra POP3 emails, I wanted 4 that was AUD$8.00 extra per month. My Game name was and still is INsane... despite the meaning of that name, I am not actually crazy so without knowing anything about webspace hosting, websites, HTML I bought a USA hosting package that had 500 emails and webspace.
Cost? $AU4.60 about half the price and 496 spare POP3 emails... plus a crap load of other goodies I did not have a clue how to use.
At the time Telstra were using the excuse that oversees connections were why the whole web surfing, emails and eBusiness were so expensive, that's why monthly access fees were so high in Australia, (they still are) but look at what I did, I went overseas and got a better deal, now my emails were in a USA server and adding to the "problem", truth is they were overcharging for data transferred on the net...and still are, Aussie data prices are artificially high, that's why this server is in central USA, in Australia game server prices are WAY too high... data is internal, why is it $3-4 per slot!!!!!!!
Think I am over reacting? What about this, Google were looking for new data centres in my region, Australasia, and where did they pick... Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong. But wait, this will mean a lot of Aussie's cloud data is not in Australia, and we are still heading overseas and making data charges higher that is a bad thing is it not ??? That's because Google are not crazy either, dealing with anyone in Australia IT business will triple your costs... *sigh* banging my head on the wall right now. Wake up Australia, the world just passed by again.
Well I was impressed with my new webspace, 500 emails and my own dotcom. So I played around with HTML and also have a few files to share... dodbits pages started to go up.
So thank you Australian Web Hosts in general particularly Telstra for being such a crap ISP... dodbits was started and continues to exist because, well basically... you are crap value. As for Web Hosting in Australia? Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha ... are you nuts! It is normally 5 times the cost I pay now.
I have gone down a path I may not have gone down because of crap ISP's value and the fact I wanted to share what I learned about stuff I make for myself in a insignificant "video game".
Funny what triggers change in your life, every cloud has a silver lining, in this case the cloud was the "web". An old saying and in my case something good came from something bad. Live by that... it is very true, always look for the positive in a negative and try and turn it around.
CSS on this website is about to get more articles, I am fielding a few questions from this sites readers about CSS GUI/HUD issues, normal stuff like "how do I change this color" or "where do I find this font". So you now see a CSS section. This will have CSS HUD DYI articles over the coming months to support CSS, here is the start of that a CSS crosshair cvar page. Not much but it is a start :)
CSS VGUI items are related to dods/TF2 stuff now so some items work the same. I will also try and place in each section the limits that you can change, like the chat colors in orangebox games, there are limited things you can do to change parts of it, if you know the limits you can change and why it may save you valuable time searching, some things are locked out to "res", "cfg" and "txt" files and will not change! Team color in dods, kill/death icons in CSS, that sort of thing.
dods Maps. I did not think I would see a significant new map released for dods ever again, but one has popped up.Punishment has relesed a new "remake" dods map of the dod_switch, dod_arch series made by Jeremy "Izuno" Miller.
dod_switchback_b1 is the name, you know it's good already ... Punishment made it, go get it and place it on your servers! It is a very close port to the old layout, I know how hard you have to work to do this, this one is very well done... nice one Punishment!

HUD's and more HUD's...
CSS got an update, weapon fixes, crosshair changes mostly. For those of us that play CSS and dods we know how much complaining that will bring.
One of the stand outs in this release is the crosshair, CSS now has a configurable crosshair, you can even have a DOT!!!! About time, CSS players have put up with all the mystery on how to see the damn thing for a long time, can't miss it now. Gone is the heap of console commands, VALVe put in a set of sliders with more options.
So... I have a release of two items for CSS, a Special Team menu that has commands, you can see that at Gamebanana. Also while you are there, I have a "fix" for the budget background, they did not do that area when they placed a background behind HUD numbers, (the problem was you could not see the numbers on maps like dust) I made a fix for that. Both of them will be adjusted in a new CSS HUD/GUI package, let the dust settle a little first, there maybe some small updates yet.
Boy are some of the CSS community going off, I cannot see how you would complain about an update that adds a crosshair that is actually better, it's just a different way to enable it. CSS and DoD:s players have always had a wine at major updates, I am sure they will eventually find out how to adjust :)
DoD:s, well what can I say, no such luck with updating that old thing... but DoD:s did rate a mention from VALVes Gabe Newell in a recent YouTube interview. About the 7 Minute mark of the 11 min video, not sure what he means in the video but it was related to what he is doing with TF2 and community added features, DoD:s maybe on a upgrade list? We will see.
I have to put this in...got to, here is an old post about dods and a new feature, well just look at the second post picture.
However, the DoD:s HUD Ver 9, I was not happy that I could not deliver a couple of options for the scoreboard, so I got off my butt and did a few. Keep and eye on this thread there are screenshots of a couple of them, Ver 10 will be made after I finish some other stuff.
Ham and Jam, well it is still delayed. Good news is they have made progress, can't wait? Me too! Make sure you read the two interviews from Jed, gives a better insight on what to expect, don't expect a dods knock off, be prepared for what some dod players thought dods should have been like, evolved into, is the feeling I get reading what they are doing. I like the fact that weapons, scoring and the whole thing is built around teamplay, it seems you just cannot complete a map if you do not work with your team members. I see making maps for this will be complex, read what Jed says about teamplay... I like what they are doing, this really does look like a game for the competitive community. Not sure how it will go for the Pub players.
This game is well worth waiting for, hang in there.
July 2011
Ham And Jam still not released
Ham and Jam is not quite there yet, the guys have been keeping news fairly quiet, that does not mean they are not working... they are "polishing it up" so we get a better game, I don't mind that at all.
I did ask the devs' about mapping and got some good answers, gameplay is clearly very important to them and they are open to ideas to support mappers. That kind of contact with a game dev is a rare thing.
If you do map for dod or dods, consider this game too. I have stopped 3 maps at an advanced stage, never going to be released for dods, H&J is my main target. Maps in dods get a bit ho hum and all end up versions of Anzio with the standard double cap in the middle and such... so boring I could scream.
Not so with H& J, they are fooling around with configurable capture point entities, (flags to non mappers) something dods mappers have waited for an never got.
What this will do is open up the options in capping flags and the mapper can fine tune, balance the map for a fairer, more interesting game for both sides. This should be very important for competitive players.
Or for the pubbers you could introduce all kinds of stuff, if you can set off a capture point with other entities.... lots of things are possible, that is if you can control them that way, I am not sure yet.
The other notable items are the main thrust of the game, unlike dods and the "No Brits Army", H&J does not have a US army side, Norway, British battles, the desert are now locations for those mappers that map for "realism".
They also have a "no sniper" policy, Quote from a recent FirsttFrag Q&A interview... "HaJ will never have sniper rifles. Case closed.", damn fine idea... the only thing I hate more than a noob sniper is a player who is good at sniper class and plays for a personal best "Kill Rate" and not the team. It is not only me, just look at on-line servers for dods or other games like CSS "No AWP" servers, how many servers have the sniper class reduced to one or not at all.Have a read here at FirstFrag, a nice series of questions put to H&J devs' will give you a better insight of where it is all heading and why this may be popular with most long time fans of dods and dod players.
It is what dods should have been? Possibly for some, but if you insist "USA team must be in H&J" think again about repeating that in their forums.
All in all H&J will not suit everyone, but there is a good amount of pro and pub dods players that may migrate to this mod because of the gameplay and team choice differences it provides that other games don't, can't or will not, we will see.
I think this will be a hit with pro players especially.
Other work on CSS and dods? Well to be honest dods is dead for me, GUI/HUD work is done for good and no maps planned, just see no future in dods if the VALVe people will not update it. Just so you know... don't ask for DoD:S custom content to be made... I deleted Day of Defeat Source on my hard drive as I don't play it at all anymore, it's been like that since February 2010 and has not changed.
CSS I am still interested in.... for now. What to do about dodbits.com? The name will stay, the content for dod will stay, stagnate maybe, but it will stay. The mapping section will surely expand to cope with new map models for use in H&J, after all, most of what is in there already were made by people already involved with H&J development!
Just think of a future dodbits as the ... "department of defence custom bits " not "custom bits and pieces for day of defeat source"

Late Update: Ham And Jam delayed !
Ham and Jam has been delayed, look for it in mid to late July 2011. It is only a little way to go now for what may be a very good WW2 game.
Make sure you read the extened news and preview the pictures, and maybe drop in to the forums to give some moral support.
Also.... you can donate, these guys deserve it, to get this far and have it look this good...well done.
INsanes HUDS and GUI for Dod:S and CSS...
Updates to two HUD and GUI sets. The old version 8 dods hud is now updated to version 9, lots of new stuff, check it out here.
The CSS GUI and HUD has also been updated to version 7, the installer was reworked and the game menu fixed, head over to game banana and check it out.
Don't forget about Ham and Jam !!!!!
Ham and Jam is a WW2 game and a release date has been set at 6 June 2011
News on that... the release has been delayed, read here.
May 2011
INsanes CSS GUI+HUD V6...
Finished a set of files that change the GUI for Counter-Strike Source. The files are rearranged in this set, especially the HUD files.
CSS was always a pain in the bum to edit colors, my set is different, have a look here. Oh... what about DoD:s? I have a set planned for that too.
April 2011
Mark this day, 6 June 2011...
Why? It is the anniversary for D-Day. There are always events to mark D-Day but this year, for gamers that play WW2 games, we have a event that is important.
Ham and Jam is a WW2 game and a release date has been set at 6 June 2011...
Ham and Jam is a teamplay orientated, first person WW2 multiplayer game centred around the British and Commonwealth campaigns from 1939-45.
Historically accurate missions coupled with careful balance between realistic and enjoyable gameplay makes Ham and Jam a unique experience.
For those of us that have been waiting for a WW2 mod, with commonweatlth forces.... since mid 2006, it is good news. Stop by their site and have a look!
"Gingerlord" has some nice "H&J" Vs "DoD:s" videos here.
Below is a map haJ Archery, it will give a fair idea of the gameplay, note this is a year old.
... I feel the urge to do some maps for this!!!! Can't wait! This is a free mod... they need donations, please support them, this was a awesome effort and I for one will donate, you should too.

New on dodbits... CSS HUD
That's correct... HUD for Counter-Strike Source, I do play it you know :) Now sitting at Version 5, I don't have a downloads section for CSS using Game Banana for releases ... no downloads section on dodbits for CSS yet ....but there are some sections on that game.
2 maps released.... dod_old_mainz ...final and a fun map dod_kalt_north_b2 Having a rest from mapping and doing some other work like webbies and HUDs. I do intend to finish dod_schwetz remake after a break from mapping.
The TF2 cvars have been updated and I will do dods and CSS soon, a few CVARS have changed on those two games now. Will update the same way as the TF2 screen.
Plagiarism and Bandwidth theftcl_rant "1" ....OMFG I do not complain about this normally but enough is enough.
There are times when people copy your work, it's OK as many people know I credit others when including their work, models in maps that sort of thing. I even don't mind not getting credited myself.
But... there is a line, taking someone else's work and claiming it is theirs. Have a look at this GUI and have a read of the posts. This guy submits a gui/hud. He changes some colours, puts his name on it, no readme in the download, actually places HIS name as author.... that says all is OK. I looked at the files, most are mine with some color changes.... he even asked for help on the CSS steam forums. (see name Ker) . He is still pushing it as his work even after a swift removal from Game Banana... and still no readme with his name all over the teammenu and the main menu that is also not his work.
What is it about Counter strike players? Why are some of them complete arseholes compared to DoD:s community, we have very few.
Don't let this deter you from customizing my work, it is just this guy cut and paste my work, and others almost 100% changes a few very small things, then cut and pasted it to make a series of "colors". Not hard at all, and what is most upsetting... my next release will be multiple colors. Unfortunately Ker has done that... using my base just as it is ready for release. So, the files will now change the way they work for color functions, his hud will die if the devs change the files, mine will continue to be supported. Unless he cuts and pastes again and changes two lines and says...all mine.
The change to the TF2 cvar list was that I am sick of other sites stealing my bandwidth, it now kicks their link to my page with an ad on it. Again, the sites doing this are huge sites, I pay for this site alone, the one ad helps me pay for a little. Ever wonder why people stop making custom content and sites go down? Try someone, like a 20,000 readership per day large site hitting your smaller site with hundreds of raw links where your ads are not viewed but theirs are. Not nice
Moral of this story? Counter-Strike Source community have some cool guys and absolute dickheads... but dod players always knew that. The bandwidth theft from large sites is a problem I can solve... but people should realise there is a limit to my resources, if pushed... I will come after you :p
November 2010
New on dodbits... Huds, lots of updates to do.
CSS HUD Ver 3, this is going well (I think so anyway) and people seem to be giving it a go, see this thread, place in your wants and I will see what I can come up with.
The dods HUDs need a tweak or two as well, already started them, see this thread for info'. At the moment the version 8 has been updated (Nov 7 2010), when I have all of it done it will change to Version 9.
Other than that, have not done much, but will get into mapping again soon... as the work load at my place of work is finally stabilizing from "ridiculous" to "too much". Just been through the busiest period of my working life in the last four months.
I nearly threw my job in a month ago... still considering it now actually.
October 2010
New on dodbits... New section added, Half Life 1 older games
This section has some tutorials and downloads of older HL1 versions, Day of Defeat mostly.
It has a Sturmbot section you may want to check out.
HUDs... I do like Counter-Strike Source, however, some of the community is male, 13 years old... there goes the neighborhood, game is rubbish.
It's no secret I like to play singleplayer in games like CSS and TF2 (WTF is a "hat" FFS) that have "community problems", in fact CSS is best served on a LAN, I looked at what they were doing in the beta version, one of the things that pisses me off is that poo orange color over black menu screens and the crosshair that you cannot see.
Well, in CSS beta the crosshair has now changed, the screens can be changed... so I did a HUD for CSS beta. I like it anyhow.
Story time kiddies... I love YouTube, YouTube is Television to me, I will not watch free to air or pay TV when I have YouTube. Normal people make a video and sometimes it comes off and sometimes not. neddle69 plays DoD:s and I think it is good enough for a giggle...

OMG it broke!!... My website broke, for some reason the PhP version got screwed up, no idea how but this site does not allow logins anymore.
The forums are gone now and good
riddiance, bloody russian spammers are a constant problem. If you want to talk to me ... contact webmaster link up there goes to me.
The good news is dodbits is fixed, the login is gone, the downloads are there and everything else.
June 2010
Why the Bogan ad?... My clan started up again, it's winter in Australia and if it gets below 15 C some of us don't go outside. The only snow I ever want to see is on Colmar. Anyway the bogans get confused easy and I thought I better place a link up there.
Mapping.. not much, been remaking a few of those "great little orange maps" that has no author, no spawn protection and is slightly screwed up. Other than that not done much, toying with doing a few quick and nasty orange maps but that's about it.
HUDs... still waiting for CSS to release and see if they do any edits... or to be precise, updates to TF2 and CSS and destroy dod stuff. I will eventually fix the little bug with the death icon in the speaker bar, not worth a whole release, if it annoys you go here.
Other than that, not much added to the site, and playing
dod again.

Why no updates... Don't worry, I have not stopped supporting dod, website will still be here for quite a while yet. I have not played dods since December 2009, in fact, no on-line games at all. The reason for this is lack of interest, the game has stagnated for me and quite a few others too. What caused this sudden lack of interest was a moderator who does have close contact with dod devs' in the steam forums did answer a direct question about FGD (mapping tools updates)the answer he gave was it is extremely doubtful dods will get any updates. Also depressing for us dods fans is some fan sites are now gone, DoD Federation for one is closed, player numbers shrinking a bit.
So, we know every TF2 update breaks dods and causes disruption to players and servers, this also drove me to stop supporting a Clan and keep a Clan server operating, it got a bit much and I stopped.
Same with mapping,
HUDs, ...everything dods. I have increased the downloads section for hard to find dod and dods downloads, please submit any worthwhile downloads of dod or dods content and I will put them up.
Will dods die? Sure it will eventually, I will keep all I can here and maybe this site will support other games (even considered playing CSS again!). At the moment I am playing the occasional single player BF2 game, especially single player AIX mod.
Ham and Jamseems to be coming along OK and I can't wait to play it. One the the big issues with dods is the lack of other teams, H&J does support this at least. Another is the lack of single player, (BOTS) support. It was a real slap in the face for dods players when TF2 got bots, not only got bots but really good bots.
It is fairly poor treatment by
VALVe here, to take a game loved by a lot of people, use it as a test bed, soak up a lot of personal time for its players with beta testing, causing maps to fail, server plug-ins to fail to the point they cannot be fixed... and then offer nothing in return, nothing but a game that breaks every time another game updates. What is worse is the original game had game-play and single player bots to die for, all that was required was to make the same formula with better graphics. What we got was a lot of useless add-ons like "Achievements" and less of what the sucessfull formula was all about.
Have dods "supporters" been hung out to dry? Of course we have. What do we do about it? Make a MOD, make your own bot system. Myself, I am waiting for H&J and looking at how the new CSS beta goes, TF2 makes me sick when I play it, just does not click with me.
The map below
dod_schwetz has moved on quite a bit, it is so close to release... it may never be released, just have not got the time, I will give it away to any realistic offer to take over the map from a mapper that will do it credit and release it.
You ne
ver know, it could end up a CSS map if I start playing that again!!! It will be very interesting to see how VALVe handle the CSS update to the Orange Box engine. It has begun and of course complaints have already started to surface as expected, I am really pissed off that I missed the opportunity to test this, many others missed out but we will all get a opportunity "soon". "Soon" = when it's ready in VALVe lingo, my guess is 4-7 weeks they will more than likely extend the beta to more players.
December 2009
Mapping Support files... New Downloads are being added, I have started support for mappers, models, prefabs, textures will be added soon, see here for these new sections, not a lot there at the moment but it will grow. If you are into mapping keep an eye on these download sections.
Update on HUDs...have not done much to look further at the file changes, they seem like another VALVe update to TF2 that just alters, (destroys is a better word for dods users) the hudlayout.res and the winpanel files and makes custom HUDs not work.
Keep an eye on this thread, it explains the changes, on the whole it just looks like they fooled around with avatar icons here and there, if your HUD is broken... just reinstall the current HUD again, the changes are buggy anyway and the old files still work fine.
Another Map:dod_schwetz was a favorite of mine, I liked the gameplay of the swap spawns and the layout so I am having a go at remaking it. Making the swap spawns is VERY difficult but I think I have a way. I have a "swap spawns" dev map and I will release it to test soon, it changes the spawns based on who just capped last. If you cap out as the attacking allies your next spawn will be the defending side, fail and you stay on the attacking side of the map.
Anyway, it's not up to a stage that it can be run, it's true to the same size as the old one, huge, but it can be trimmed, I just want to make it "as the old one was" or very close to it and let others make their own.
Pics if interested!

New dodbits site
The tutorials are being updated, downloads are now in place, all of the files that were on the old dodbits site are now in the downloads. Some have moved to a new category called older retired files because they do not work anymore for one reason or another.
A new downloads section is being added C O C K Maps. In this section I will try and address an issue that other sites shy away from...altered abandoned maps. This is a dangerous area because of everyone's opinion on "Copyright". Mappers sometimes make a map that has promise but a few problems, so sometimes these are fixed and placed on a server where you download it via a fast downloads. Sometimes a mapper does not include a author name in the proper place, embedded in the bsp via a mapname.txt file.
I hope the new section addresses this and allows the rest of us to use a abandoned map that has been fixed. Of course I expect problems with a section like this, if you see your work in there contact me... a word of warning, don't go nuts at me for doing this if you did not mark your map in the bsp properly, you are partially to blame for making a map with errors and not completing it correctly with your own name!Allways make a mapname.txt file (maps folder) with your info in there using pakrat to embed it.
Forums are up and ready for you to post again.
New map... dod_koln remake
Waldo made dod_koln for older dod versions, it never got remade for source. If you remember this map you may like to take a spin around this beta release. dod_old_koln_b5 is a remake using the old structure of Waldo's bsp so it will be very familiar to walk around for those that remember the old one.Download the map here.
Notice: dodbits.com no longer has forums, they have been deleted.
Abuse by Russian bots is the reason.
New Sections...
INsanesPSD files released. My PSD files used for images are in a new page of the Half Life 2 Graphics section. I will try and include all I can find of mine and other authors as well. Go here to check it out.
Mapping section on dodbits
You may have noticed a new section over there on the left.... Half Life 2 Mapping. This section, like all of them on dodbits are just my notes on items I find as I explore things. Ole' INsane is not a great mapper but lets just say I know enough to get in trouble and get myself out of it.
The mapping tutorial section focuses on Day of Defeat: Source but has general tips for all Source mapping. There is a links section for some pages you may not be aware of. The main focus is really to port older
dod maps. I never understood why this was so hard to get the old layout and remake a map, that is, until I tried it myself. Hard...very hard to line up everything. Porting a map is not a matter of decompiling it and making a quick copy in Hammer.
If you are trying to port older HL1 maps, no matter how old, and get a basic plan together to port it, I urge you to take a look and at least read what I have.
The
Baguet Mapping Team have released the Baguet Map Pack. This means new objective icons for huds like the Medal HUD Version 1, historically VALVe usually release something for DoD:S around this time of year that breaks something in the HUD's. That is why I don't update around this time of year... just let it roll on for a little more yet and let me repair a few things on this site, then I shall look at all the HUD's again.
What am I working on at the moment? It's all mapping, so far I have a version of
dod_thunder, dod-snowcity_V3 released and will come back to them. Before I do I wanted to get the basic porting technique correct, that seems to be fine. The maps I targeted to do this were...
dod_oslo, now in progress with another mapper. I got it to a basic block stage and stopped.
dod_mainz, a dev/part textured map is made and the VMF. The map featured in the tutorial, the bsp is in the support package .
dod_switch (later name is dod_arch along with another), I have the basic building blocks done but stopped when I learned another mapper has made a version, this was a good one to look at and test the method in the tutorial because of the height of the map, like dod_avalanche it is up and down like a yo-yo.
I have to contact the mapper who remade dod_switch, it is quite good, some problems on a large server with FPS (lack of areaportals maybe?) no idea why he has not released, may be one of the "made it for my clan" maps... I know I do this too, there are quite a few maps I have not released but are on our server :) Anyway pics of the fore-mentioned map he has made....
dod_koln, now that one I had to look at, it was a favorite like thunder. To get the basic walls up was easy so this one I am continuing, quite enjoying it too. It will end up like the dod_mainz one slightly unfinished dev/texture mix? I don't know... may go all the way on this. Time will tell.

New Hud...
Sorry about the lack of action since December I have been busy ... believe it or not :)
Some
dodbits readers will remember the Ultra Mini right HUD, misfit revamped it in 2007 and now it has been updated. Details of what this HUD is and download is here.
New Map...
Yep, I am learning how to map. I bit off way more the first time out but have manged to release quite a good version of dod_thunder.
Release thread of dod_old_thunder_b8 is in the steam forum here . There will be another version of this after I fix a few errors.
Other things I have found while mapping is that it ISpossible to have vehicles in dods, also I have a coastal gun that fires a round that explodes on impact, both need a touch and a tweak here and there but... they do work.
I love to fix maps that have been abandoned by the original mapper... if you have a favorite map that needs a quick fix, let me know. Just make sure the mapper has in fact abandoned the map and try to contact them, if they are not around anymore I can decompile any map and edit.
Fixed tutorial...
The chat files were changed a while back and I updated the tutorial on how to manipulate theses new files Read more here.
Whats next for dodbits?...
The whole site needs an upgrade, slowly doing that bit by bit. I had hoped to add way more maps but there are lots of sites doing that already. Family, work, mapping and the
Bogan Clan keep me very busy.
Older HUDs broken by the last update are going to be reviewed, no new HUDs planned (I think we have enough now).
Ser
ver set up tutorials are started but require finishing, that looks like the next thing, make a set of files for SourceMod and keep that set updated as plugins change.
This will be the same
plugin line up I use on our clans Boganserver, lots of custom additions to the normal menu and a few custom hacks to individual plugins. Reading the SourceMod documents for the first time is confusing... well it was for me when I went to adjust a few more complex items anyway. I hope to make that a little easier for someone starting out.
Cheers

Day of Defeat 3.1 Beta now on Steam
Something for the Old school players...
We all know there is a steam version of the old Day of Defeat. But what about the early versi
ons? ***Version History of Day of Defeat***
* Beta 1.0 (January 12 2001)
* Beta 1.1 (February 14 2001)
* Beta 1.2 (April 5 2001 ?)
* Beta 1.3 (July 1 2001)
* Beta 2.0 (October 13 2001 ?)
* Beta 2.1 (May 10 2002)
* Beta 3.0 (July 11 2002)
====================================
* Beta 3.1 (August 8 2002) This is the version we are talking about here
====================================
* Version 1.0 (May 1 2003)
* Version 1.1 (November 14 2003, the first release on Steam)
* Version 1.2 (May 19 2004)
* Version 1.3 (July 7 2004)
* DoD:Source - (September 26 2005)
Well, a lot of older players say that the Day of Defeat 3.1 Beta version was the best version ever made, others will say it is too old... whatever. It's a matter of taste, why not just try it and play all three versions on steam. There has been attempts to play this on-line before, this time it may stick.
Download is here . It is uploading now and will take a while, come back latter if it does not work.
The attempts before this were a bit flaky for adding it in the Steam Games list and finding a ser
ver, this version is easy to install and there are servers up already. Further information, Fourms, alternate download, IRC, Community....

DAMN IT !!!!!!
Sorry everyone, my most popular HUD (Black panels Version 7) has had the wrong download link on it for about a month.
Fixed that now and is here.
October 2008.
Sorry about the lack of new stuff here, will add some more soon. I have spent a lot of time on mapping. Will release some soon.
Huds
, Miniright hud needs updates and the bare huds, other huds are OK. Will look at those soon.
Also is the new section on Game servers and how to set one up. I have to add a set of
SourceMod files my clan uses on our servers. It is a collection of the main plug-ins and added some popular plug-ins that all work together well.
If you have a question, please post in the forums or contact me using the "Contact Webmaster" link above in the menu on the left.

UPDATE July 5
Huds....
Huds... made a start... Download it . Please... do not ask for changes I have not got the time. I will switch on the tutorials section... but there is a lot of wrong stuff there... at your own risk OK?
Warning: the download also has a optional dod_english file... there are X rated words in that file... don't install it if you are sensitive to bad language :) All it is... it renames the achievements titles for a bit of fun.
Making your own HUD?
I just want to let you know that the download above has an edited ClientScheme.res file. This file adjusts a lot of items on the screen. Nearly every function is explained on the line of the particular setting in that file. Also there are some custom fonts already added.
Just look for // * Description on these items of interest.
Older news....
Explanation of why I can't help on content at the moment and why so angry...
OK from being angry to slightly pissed off now.... this update is real bad timing for me, two weeks would have been better. Why the hell do they just switch off like that... fools. A lot of Australian servers are still gone... hope they come back. Last count there are around 35... was a couple of hundred, a lot of them with only the lame Valve maps and no controls.
Nice one devs... release a "beta" that is worse... has problems and exploits that were not there in the old one... kill a lot of the server mods that maintain a good playing environment... then release a "Free Weekend" so all kinds of fools can crash servers and make game-play shit.
All in the name of what... a new Stats system.... was it really worth it?
Also was... all the custom maps got wiped from the server... no warning, on top of that ... what the hell with the skys guys? Most of the orange / dev maps have crap skys... and dod_argentan ... still has bad textures.
The update was clearly NOT ready and Valve should post an apology to the people who provide a place where their product is used. If it is not broken...don't fix it.
Thank god for the people over at SourceMod ... they are supporting dods. Go there... download the pluginsand make a donation... those guys are way cool.
A Warning would have been nice you reckless Yanks. Communicate better for fucks sake.
Put the above in the steam forums and it will get deleted... I think its better if someone else starts another forum.... absolutely not in any way connected with that place so people can say what they like... anyone got a suggestion?
dodbits....
Nothing much has changed , still putting back together servers. Rewording tutorials, downloads on this site is huge and will have to wait. I will open the forums again and post requests if you like but please be prepared for a big wait, my private life is first and time after that is the Bogan Clan and what they need, next is this site after that content.
It has taught me to be more careful on how to present tutorials... just throw up basic guides for the people who already know some basics and don't go into huge detail. Games like dods just change way too quick, I don't like having out of date stuff and at the moment the whole site is packed with out of date stuff.
sv_pure knocked off some, and the new chat system... and recently... a stats "upgrade" Just too much has changed and It ends up in countless emails ... some even hostile :) of requests to fix.
Here is the low down on priority's...
Cheers
INsane.
July 3... have to shut down for a bit sorry, content is wrong...
They, and the downloads are now out of date after the update, I have played enough of the beta to know I don't like dods anymore. The achievements and nemesis stuff is crap... they did not update anything but a stats system.
Only 22 people downloaded the updated hud I made over a month. I take it there is little interest now.
If that is all they are doing, making it worse for me to play, I will ...
I don't like TF2 all that much, CSS I still like. If the game is all about stats now... you lost me :)
However, I will stick around long enough to see if dods servers and mods can switch off this stuff.
What did dods need?
Just look at the poll on this site.

Older news
I have not worked on a lot of stuff recently, at least that's what it looks like anyway.
I have been busy... and it is dod related too, I had to go through a learning curve or two. Seeing this is a "one man band" website I am sorry but have had little time to update.
The main thing is I now know quite a bit about server administration. How to pick a provider, how to setup mods like Mani and eventscripts and edit the code to customize it.
So... expect some more tutorials on that, things like a complete "how to set up a dods server" tutorial... by someone who has just gone through it and started out with very little experience.
You can't just rent a server, put a cool name on it, run standard maps and wait for the players to come... they will not come, it requires more than that.... read more if interested.
The Tutorials for a server set-up would be?
I think a real basic one is of no use. It just tells you how to rent a server that will be one of the many empty ones out there.
When I started to look for information on how to get a clan ser
ver up and running I found a lot of CounterStrike and TF2 ones were of use... and a hell of a lot of outdated, poor, incorrect Day of Defeat Source information.
What this needs is a step by step, divided into sections, comprehensive guide, also some links of the best places to go for info.
As you can see, you just don't rent a server and watch it fill. It is hard work and requires effort, perhaps I can write a few things down to help....we will see
All stuf
It may be slightly faster delivering files to the client, especially the "loading resources" part of starting a game.

PayPal! don't worry it's OK!
You may have noticed a PayPal donation on the right side... don't panic I am not homeless, destitute or bankrupt and dodbits is here for a long time yet.
This is really about a way to fund a dods server in Australia, nothing too big, just a 16 slot fun map public server between a few friends.
But if you want to donate a small amount to dodbits... knock yourself out! I won't mind :)
If you need to know more about this and want to post a topic... see the Bogan site and Bogan forum here .
A TF2 Custom HUD?
EDIT: February 2008 ... I may not do this at all... TF2 is fine for me the way it is, stopped looking at this for now but if you have a question... send me an email.
Want a custom TF2 HUD? Well I have not played it that long yet but I have had a look at the files and lots of things are possible. The game is still having many updates so making one now is a risk but there is nothing stopping you placing a request in the new TF2 forum on dodbits. I'll see what I can do!
Ultra-Mini-Right HUD by misfit
Updated now optimized for sv_pure servers, this just means any special graphics used will default back to stanard ones when on sv_pure 2 servers. See here for details.
Custom Objective Icons now updated September 2007.
Two packs as before, one for US and Iron Cross and another for US and Swastika Flag icons.
These two packs are also optimized for sv_pure servers... if you go to a server that knocks out custom images, they just default back to a normal graphics so it won't mess up your hud files.
There are extras like a custom menu found in my other HUDs, class screen images, capture panel items. These will work with any HUD, standard, CAL types, INsanes small HUD Version 7, MOH types.
Version 7 HUD (Both Standard and Black panel colors) updated.
See the downloads section for details or... Black panels and Standard Panels .
I had to wait with any HUD updates until VALVe and the people who implemented the sv_pure server option stopped playing around with it.
It has affected the MoH Ver 3 HUDs badly and also the Ver 7 Small HUD and others to a lesser degree. The menu was affected because it used custom small graphics in the materials folder and also some scripting cvars that are now banned. None of these you could consider cheating of course... they just used the incrementvar cvar to toggle choices to choosing a netgraph type and moving it around the screen. The banning of the cvar was done to stop no recoil scripts from being used.
I still think that VALVe leaned the wrong way here... I have looked at a few cheat sites to see what impact this has had. It has done little, the materials and scripting hacks have just been replaced with undetectable memory hacks... so if someone says sv_pure was a good idea, they are wrong, the cheaters amoung us have just moved to a better hack.
Custom stuff is OK if it defaults back when on these servers, but if some servers kick you because of custom files or you find big white boxes where a image or texture should be ... it is a pain going from server to server.
So... I do not intend to update the MoH ver 3 HUD at all... it can stay broken along with others that use a lot of special graphics. I won't do anymore custom player icons or any of the stuff the sv_pure servers destroy.
I was working on some Australian Models, skins and sounds to replace the US team like this pack for the old dod ... there is now no way I am going to finish it for DoD:s, it is hard to do this in source... plus the fact that no one may use them anyway. I found the old half life engine only moderately hard... but dang ... you have to be spot on in source!
Now do you see some of the impact of sv_pure servers? What use is good custom material when you can't use it on a percentage of servers. I also know that other people have also stopped making stuff for this game...can't blame them, it's pointless spending months on something that may end up not working when VALVe change the "rules" and break it all.
What will be done... and I will take my time, is a revamp of VER 7 HUD to comply with sv_pure servers so it still has custom graphics...but when you join a sv_pure 1 or 2 server it will default to custom materials, like this updated menu
I also want to make a downloads section for the older dod versions, make a few installer based packs of the best stuff and a tools section also (tools used to customize the old half life games).
So dodbits will be around for quite a while yet (I have other non-gaming sites too) but I have stopped a lot of support for this game and moved to others... when a update breaks a HUD .. the updates will be slower but I will still do them to at least the version 7 HUD.
July 2007
New Tutorial about Alpha Channels added.
There is a bit of mystery when you start to make a VTF image (Graphics file used in Half Life 2 ) that requires Transparency... a little bit hard to get your head around at first but essential if you make content for Half Life 2... even a spray.
I have made one tutorial that deals with how to use the Alpha Channel in Adobe Photoshop, the tutorial is here .
I will also continue soon with another two, one for the Gimp and one for Paint.NET, both are free programs and well worth the effort to learn. While using a couple of plugins recently with Paint.NET, I found it easier to make an animated Crosshair than Photoshop...go figure :)
Topics that will be covered are animated crosshairs, player icons, flags and maybe animated sprays... although I don't see a lot of servers you can use sprays on anymore.

Steam "update" ?
If you use my custom menus you will notice after the recent steam update they no longer fully function. It depends on what the button is.
The other parts of the HUD's seem OK but the commands will not issue from the menu... the menu is just a Teammenu.res file with added buttons that issue normal commands... those command still work but not from the menu, you will get an error posted in the console...
Unknown command: <command>
FCVAR_CLIENTCMD_CAN_EXECUTE prevented running command:<command>
Skalman over at Day of Defeat.NU has a great explaination of pure servers , basic setting difference, issues with sv_pure 1 and I see he covers custom huds down the bottom... worth the read.
The issues with the menu seem to be outside the pure server settings... it looks like a seperate part of the update. I will work on that more when not so busy. Update of the cvar list is required and that takes a fair amount of time.
I don't know if this is a bug that will be fixed, but I can tell you I won't be making anymore menus if they keep it like it is ... it is impossible for me to fix. You will have to go back to keeping 20+ commands in your head and typing them in the console.
I am getting the feeling VALVe don't want custom files in game directories anymore... it seems a wave of "cheater Paranoia" may be bubbling inside VALVe. At first I thought the pure servers was a good idea, I am now tipping the other way... it is starting to smack of over protection.
Not happy.
Well here is a news flash for anyone at VALVe that is considering anymore overprotective measures... having a custom good looking skin or a different croshair should be reguarded as support for the game it is made for... not a cheat. Making a lot of rework for guys like me when an update rolls around is fine, I can deal with that.
Blocking custom content is a departure from the Half Life series of games I know and love to play and make content for.
I have had many messages of thanks for the menu idea, (it's all VALVe's files... just the tutorials on how to manipulate it is what I did) it's also used by Counter-Strike Source server Admins to help them make a custom, easy to use GUI to control their servers.
The whole idea of this was to replace the missing function of the old command menu. Now this is gone too... we are going backwards it seems.
I have not complained about updates in the past as they have been good for the game... but when I look at this update... (as a person that customizes parts of the game) I see a clear message by the game developer... hands off our files.
I can't wait for the next installment of "lets wipe out all cheaters" update... just like a friendly fire server ... lob too many grenades without looking, you may kill the wrong player.
How far will they go with the next update? I'll say it again for clarity... this is not the Half Life I know from the past. Customizing Half Life games has a large following and has given us games like Day of Defeat and Counter-Strike. To place barriers in front of the people doing that work is just plain dumb.
Lets hope they don't destory too much else :)
INsanes Ver7 HUD... reworked again!
This HUD has been download so many times I have lost count, it is a clear favorite with you guys so ... spit and polish time again.
This time I have reworked some of the stuff that you don't see to get some more options in ... to make it easy to install. I have now started to add Language files to my stuff, this hud is the first effort and it now supports German and French languages thanks to two dodbits members Grimmi and solar plexus (German) and Rom1 (French)... thanks very much guys.
The tranlations they made now make it possible for others to use in their own lanuguage. Teammenu French * Teammenu German
If you find something wrong with the Translations that affect the Team menu and win panels, or would like to help make a traslation for your language there is a forum and a page to help you help me... make one.
But that's not all... there are new options as well, here is all of them plus some old ones...
* Added support for International lanugages, so far only German and French.
* Crosshairs option has two new animated crosshairs one for SMG's and another for Rifle.
* New Fonts, I have tried to make sure these are good for all resolutions... large and small option.
* 8 Kills and Deaths Options, there is a variety of combinations ... the installer will install one option.
* Colored Panels Standard and Black in two seperate installers.
* Larger Player Status Panel option
* Small font for Netgraph option
* Smaller Player ID icons option
* Colored small graphics like the winpanel graphics and small flags in the capture bar.
* The Custom Team menu will control items on the screen even further.
Pics, some Black panel and some Standard color....
Teammenu English * Teammenu French * Teammenu German * WinPanels * Kills and Deaths Options * New Chat Box/small fonts * Larger HUD option * Animated X-Hairs * All X-Hairs *
Download... Black Panel Version. * Standard Color Version

New Hud: Ultra-Mini-Right HUD by [FPS]misfit
[FPS]misfit has made a version of the MiniRight HUD, (I never released it was still a beta) and his version is how I would have liked the MiniRight HUD ending up... so his HUD is now the standard for that style. I love playing with this HUD, very nice.
The "Ultra-Mini-Right HUD" is a departure from the traditional layout.
The main thrust of the idea here is to move some major items so they stay in the 4 corners of the screen. The traditional hud has a problem of going too far into the centre of the screen, shrinking items is possible of course but this takes it even further.
The result is ... you can see more of the Map. The only downside of this is getting used to the new places especially the object icons.
Here is a couple of early views, compare them to the first pic of a standard HUD...
800x600 windowed mode standard DoD s hud.
800X600 windowed mode Ultra-Mini-right with standard fonts.
1024x768 highlighted font option in Kills/deaths
Widescreen spec view (357 kb... big pic)
You can download and try it here.
Discuss this HUD and changes you would like here.
dodbits Downloads section...needs more files?
Submit a file you think should be in the dodbits downloads.
The file does not have to be your own work, I would like to place more downloads on dodbits... but I would like the best of the best, the one that you think stands out.
So post in this thread in the dodbits Forums or send me an email and put in a bit of info, file address, authors name and address, opinions you have. Just a address is all I need but supply as much as you like.
What I will do is check it for any errors, if I find some I will contact the author if possible and then package it with a installer and place it in dodbits downloads.
Why do this?
Well you save the rest of the community time by your opinion and knowledge of custom stuff you have already tried. I can post your opinion in the download page and others can post there too... this info may also benefit the person who made the content too.
So get to it!
This is open for all types of content not just dods, got a favourite text editor or some program that you use for customizing a game? Well post those details too, if it has not got a category in dodbits downloads I will make a new one.
International versions of my menus and HUDs.
Some content items I have are popular... but they are all in English. Not fair I say!
The Half Life 2 GCF files have language support and certain files that control the display of words in HUD's and game panels work in a special way to display the correct language of the user.
A lot of my custom stuff does not use this system... the result is english only. It is not possible to make 18 seperate HUD's and packages for all the language's Half Life 2 supports... but I can try and make one separate international version for certain popular items.
Another thing I can do is to make a Tutorial on how this language system works in the GUI files so others can convert custom stuff for their own language ... supporting their own fellow players.
I am still working on this but progress is slow as I keep changing the menu and HUD's. I have not dropped the idea but I will do more next month.
This little "project" has already started with the help of some great guys , thanks to them for thier work... more will be added soon.
Calling all Version 7 users...
UPDATED AGAIN 19 MAY 2007
I rushed the last update of the Ver 7 HUD, it had quite a few things I was not happy about and I noticed some were even worse on 1280 x 1024 display settings... only way I can test is in a windowed mode on my 20" widescreen.
So, if you have a display running those settings, I would like some help pleeeeeease!
This ver 7 hud is not my personal favorite... but a hell of a lot of people download it and it deserves to be correct. here are the changes...
Two basic types now for ver 7, black and standard dods colors.
* The kills and deaths colors and options... small changes of some colors and fonts.
* All hud fonts, checked and adjusted, tried to rework the fonts for better display for 1280x1024 displays.
* Fixed Teamselect menu from moving too far on the right side... more centred now.
* Small adjustments to hud items inside player status panel and fireselect.
* Standard version adjusted to standard dods colors... slight changes to kills and deaths colors.
* Black version has all panels black now, adjusted capture progress bar colors.
* Adjusted installers for the two types.
* Minimap transparency has 4 levels (forgot to add this from other huds)
* Now has 8 kills and deaths options.
* Small change in Crosshairs, added one, renamed three (make sure you uninstall old test version) Pics... All Crosshairs nine of them. Explanation of fading crosshairs.
* Added an option to have a larger Player Status Panel that enables the use of the "Current Weapon" and "Player class" images. This required some further shrinking of the Ammo Graphics. Picture of the new option. Both Standard and Black panel installers have been adjusted to have this option. Look for the "Larger HUD Option" tickbox in the installers.
Post comments in this thread please or email me "Contact Webmaster" link above left menu.
Thanks
INsane.

DAY OF DEFEAT: SOURCE VISUAL UPGRADE (DODSVU ver. 1) by Wile E. Coyote
If you don't drop in to the Day of Defeat Forums you may not know of this great Custom pack, well worth the download!
Wile E. Coyote has assembled a great pack here, Player Skins, sounds, custom HUD, lots of good looking stuff... optimized by Wile so it plays as good as it looks.
Sabre has also released an add-on to match Wile's player skin. Both of these quality packs can be reviewed and downloaded here.

CAMP1 Pack
You may have noticed the recent update news about a Day of Defeat Source Map pack.
Three great maps that have been checked and play tested to a very high level of quality. I have a NSIS easy install for this pack. Read more and download...
Site improvements.
The new Downloads section is coming together nicely. I have not placed all the downloads in yet but it is now live, just click on the "All Downloads" link on the "Downloads" right menu.
The new section allows ratings and comments so if you find something wrong or just want to say anything about that download... put a comment in or rate the download.
New HUD... MiniRight version 1 .
UPDATE: A Beta version is released for testing....
I started making a Pop-up HUD ...but got distracted... temporary ADHD kicked in? Well whatever happened I put aside the Pop-up HUD for a moment and I have a HUD that takes a lot of items right down in size.

The player status panel, (ammo, health, stamina) is traditionally on the left.
Not so with this HUD... the image you see there is the lower right side of the screen.
As you can see you have a stamina bar, ammo, health... also note that the capture timer is in there ...and the Object icons (Flags from the top right ).
What this does, moving all those items down there is create a hole on the bottom left. Now the chat box has been slimmed down even more and lowered down further.
This HUD will not be for everyone, but a lot of people want very little on their screens... no Object icons, no kills and deaths, no chat or very very small fonts.
I may even put in an option that takes the kills and deaths on to the pop-up minimap screen, (press mouse 4 and window pops up fullscreen...let go and it's gone) that would mean nothing on the top...just the minimap window, the player status in the right corner with all the fireselect - MG bars, capture timer, ammo, health staminia, and object icons all in that small panel.
With the minimap pop-up window it is possible to put a fair amount of HUD items on there ... even the winpanels although I have had some problems with those :)
Here are some screenshots 1024x768 cap-out on my det test map and a large widescreen 1680x1050 (warning large image 0.5 mb) cap-out on donner. I'll play with this a little more and see what options I can squeeze in to this. There will be two types standard dod:s colors with standard icons and a black version with swastika icons.
March 2007 update.
Stuff I will be working on next month!
Pop-up Hud.
MOH Ver 3 now updated with the new Chat box.
INsanes Ver 7 hud revamped
It's back and has some improvements ...as well as fixes !
The Chat Box is slimmed down. There is also the 4 kills and Deaths options now inside the installer and not as a separate package.
Options are...
Pics.... Teammenu WinPanels /K/D Options New Chat Box/small fonts
NEW... First look at some new HUDs. The guys at CAL wanted an update...
CAL 1 standard fonts. CAL 2 Small fonts CAL 6 Small fonts.
In all 5 hud types like before but just with a different chat box panel, all have a small fonts option that affects the kills/deaths area and the chat text.
I have submitted the HUDs for testing, next is my stuff :)
NEW... Chat box filter cvars see this page.
STEAM UPDATE and DoD:S HUDS... broken and looks like Poo.
Also will break other MODS custom huds like Counter-Strike Source
I get a weird feeling in my Gut when I see steam updating. Every now and again a update will screw up every dod:s HUD. It's happened again... I am working on it.
It may take a day or so because I want to explore the new chat system a bit more before I add the new info to all my custom HUDs, they will be all redone to comply to the new files.
Here is a bit more info...
Update changes to dod:s HUD 11 mar 2007
There is a update that will break parts of my huds...and all other custom HUDs for dod:s.
* Improved multiplayer voice communication, now using a much clearer codec
* First release of a completely reworked in game text chat to which now includes a chat history and a filter to only see important chat messages
* Fixed not being able to use sounds, decals or models if they were downloaded from the server
The Voice chat is great, very clear.
The second part is the one that will break custom HUD's. The new text chat system adds new entries to two files...
dod/scripts/HudLayout.res
The section that controls the position of the hus chat text has been removed from about half-way down the file and placed down the bottom, with a new entry in that section... "PaintBackgroundType" "2"
"PaintBackgroundType" "2" adds rounded corners to a VGUI panel, this is because the chat you type for a message is now inside a panel.
The second change is in the ClientScheme.res file, this new change is for the chat text and the scoreboard...
// Used by scoreboard and spectator UI for names which don't map in the normal fashion
"DefaultVerySmallFallBack"
It's just a new font addition.
Both of these changes add a new Standard ClientScheme.res and HudLayout.res to the users game directory via the update, breaking the HUDs.
For a quick fix you can just reinstall the "broken HUDs" and it will function OK.
I am working on a fix, I just need to explore the new chat system a little further... looks very interesting :)
There must be more files involved with this, I'll have a poke and a fiddle and see what pop's up.
The News article reads..."First release of a completely reworked in game text cha...."
Sounds like there is more to come yet!
I found more....
There are more files...well there had to be for the new panel :)
They are not in the day of defeat source.gcf or other mods GCF files.. they are in the base source engine 2.gcf.
That means the new files can be extracted out of the gcf file and placed in the MOD folder of the game cstrike or dod, and 'worked on".
The new files are ...
"dod/resource/UI/ChatFilters.res" ...The catagories like Joins/Leaves, Name Changes and so on.
"dod/resource/UI/BaseChat.res" ...The file to control the SIZE of the panel, might trim that down a bit :D
"dod/resource/chat_english.txt" The labels for the catagories/buttons. I could not see any other ones like chat_french.txt...but there must be some.
"dod/resource/ChatScheme.res" This file controls the fonts, boarders, scrollbars in the new chat system... the team colors cannot be changed still.
"materials/vgui/fonts/buttons_32.vbf"...can't see where that one is?
Time to play.... and after that I will play around with the new goodies :)
Older news....
dodbits is back....
dodbits is back... it had some minor database problems to fix but all looks OK now. If you do find a problem on the site, please inform me via the "contact webmaster" link on the upper left menu... thanks for coming back!
I now have a LOT more space and at last a better connection from Australia to upload files. My old host would time out ...just making a simple, small page :) The new Host is Bluehost I can recommend them, good service so far.
Good news everybody... or bad, depending on what happens.
I am changing my web host...if, it all goes well I should be able to host a lot more stuff than I can now.
So... if dodbits goes bang in the next week or so... IT WILL BE BACK! Hold on...this may get rough.
February 2007 Updates .
HELP!
I need a little help to make some different language versions of my HUDs and menus. No coding or text file stuff is required... just visit the forums and post some conversions for me :) Thanks.
UPDATE: 23 FEB 2007... Thanks to the efforts of Grimmi (German) and Rom1 (French) I now have a good base to make an International Version of my HUD parts, like the Menu entries (titles and buttons) and winpanels.
I will put more "templates" for other Languages in the forums soon...just want to make the French and German ones work first :)
This will result in a couple of updates to the Versions... 6, 7 and MOH 3 types.
I am also playing around with another version based on the MOH 3 huds, one that returns the changeable small class image beside the health bar... at the moment it the same for all classes.
Winpanels will change a bit too, and some minor changes to Team menus.
NEW FEB 3 ... A Simple BOT for DoD:s anyone?
RCBot2 package for a simple dods Bot
The above link is the release in the dod forums, the package (not the bots) was assembled by me for testing HUD stuff, it allows me to spawn an AXIS BOT ...the standard dod:s BOT only has ALLIES support. These bots at least allow me to test AXIS stuff.
They are not smart Bots (RCBot2 beta) they are made by Cheeseh. http://rcbot.bots-united.com

January 2007 Updates.
New Jan 11... Free Graphics Programs page.
I made a tutorial with some information on installing free programs to edit VTF files. Have a read if interested. The Tutorial has links to all the items you need and further information on how to use The GIMP and other free tools to make your first VTF file, in this case the tutorial is about making a "One Dot Crosshair".
New Jan 7... Player ID Icons 4 packs to download.
New pages and content added. I had a clean out of old items on some pages and added some new content, still some more pages that need updating, like the custom menus Tutorial and downloads page...I will get to that eventually.
New content is here... New Custom Objective Icons for DoD:S New Custom Wartorn Flags for DoD:S. (A clean Flag version is also available)
Also is a lot of HUD stuff released in forums but not here... NEW Other Custom HUDs
There is a Counter-Strike Downloads page now, not a lot in there but I do have some more items to add.
I still need people to write up some articles for the DoD:s Scripts & cvars pages!
If you have a script... or an explanation of a command, contact me and I will add it with your name on it :) All that is required is a email or a forum post and I will put it in that section for others to read.
Happy new year .
MOH VERSION 3 DoD:S HUD is ready...
A new Team menu has been made and the welcome screen, class screens and team menu screens are all black...
Some Images are widescreen size... they may be a bit big and not fit on your screen!....
There are the two seperate versions, both are installer types, the ZIP types will have to wait. I am a bit short on pictures and I used some old ones, there are many options in the installer...
BASIC HUD INSTALL... Replaces the Player status panel, end-of-round panels, repositions other panels and colors.
OBJECT ICONS... Replaces Object icons with Iron Cross (or Swastika Flag) and US Flag icons.
MINIMAP ICONS... Replaces Minimap icons with Iron Cross (or Swastika Flag) and US Flag icons.
PLAYER ID ICONS... Replaces the player ID icons with Iron Cross (or Swastika Flag) and US Flag types.
German and US Flags... Flag Textures by INsane. Simple, dirty 48 Star US Flag and Iron Cross (or Swastika Flag).
Custom XHAIRs... Installs extra custom Crosshairs includes a ONE DOT solid XHair.
Teamselect Menu... Installs a custom teammenu with custom commands... Minimap.. Audio.. Chat Controls.
Small Netgraph Text... Installs a custom font to shrink the netgraph size one third smaller.
Mani Panel Fix... Installs a file that lowers the Mani advert Panel lower... away from the flags.
DoD 1.3 Class names... Installs the authentic class names the same as DoD 1.3 like MG42-Schütze a Machine Gunner.
SMALL FONTS... Installs small fonts. This will affect Chat font and the kills and deaths message area.
New sections and Site Functions being added.
I am trying to open up the site to more Tutorials from others, if you have something you have posted in a forum and want to place it somewhere I can help.
Two sections that should be popular are DoD:s Scripts & cvars and Half Life 2 Graphics. I can add more sections if you like.
I am trying out some tools in Joomla, (this is a Joomla site) it allows users to post articles and edit them using a very easy WYSIWYG editor and image up-load through your web browser. It's not too complex, more like using a word processor. If I set an access level on a login / password you can make new articles all by yourself and edit them just like a forum post... but more perminent, more room and image control.
New updates to the Version 6 and 7 HUDs.
The two small huds were put together real quick in July after the last big update. I was in the middle of doing some new HUDs ...they will now have to wait. The changes are a few fixes to internal files to allow more options.

POLLS!!!
Please ... if you use my NSIS installers ... can I have a bit of feedback :) click and vote to the right.
The Red Orchestra free trial put a folder called, "common" in the steamapps folder (where your Hl2 Mods are kept).
At first I thought it 'broke" the installer ... the installers function has a flaw, it finds the folder name alphabetically. So... it does not find the dod folder correctly, it will find ANY folder, the first one from "a" to "z.
Poo !
I will fix this, and that may mean going away from NSIS and using two other types, Clickteam for simple stuff and INNO setup... for more complicated installs.
NSIS is just to flamin' hard... I understand the code in INNO much better. I will be able to supply better installers...with much more functions :)
...and of course, after I have worked it all out, a Tutorial on making them :)
I have now got a fix for NSIS installers... the steam folder finder works much better than before, finds the dod folder of the steam main account user :) This will also work in counter-strike/CS:S or any Steam game with a couple of changes to the script.
The next thing to do is to get some custom choices on the components section, (where you tick and untick items) working in a way that it is easier to assemble for the person who is making the installer.
I will redo all the downloads soon and also provide a Zip package along side of each installer. After that a Tutorial for others to do their own for maps, models.. any custom content.
Not as much fun as making a hud, skin, or a map... but a good installer that works properly for steam games, with a more complicated components section and the ability to skin it, is needed for the people who don't understand the steam folder system.
Update: I have completed a set that has both the steam folder finder and the options that when pressed, deselect others of the same type... like small fonts with black kills/deaths background or small fonts with yellow kills/deaths background.
Making some NSIS / many font/kills deaths options HUDS soon :p
Oh...and a tut.

NEW! 29 JULY 2006
Some of the hud pages needed a update, some still do.
I have started reworking these and the pages with the most changes are listed under Helpful HUD Customizing Techniques. These pages have all undergone changes.
The pages with the most changes in them are ... Positioning HUD Items on the Screen, Adjusting items while in the game and Maps, Bots and Notes.
Lots of tips for customizing HUDs. Some of the tips can be used in other HL2 mods..not only DoD:s.
Another new page ... How to Customize the DoD:s Scoreboard.
If you have not read this page already Tools that make it easy. It may be of interest to people who have not done any customizing before. It is a good place to start.
No new HUDs yet as I have been busy with other things... like day to day living and some CAL HUDs :)
I do plan to do some more tutorials and provide some more items to use in custom files.
One in progress is a "enhanced" set of HUD files that are far easier to change things as the standard set you get from the GCF files are not really set up for customization.
They will just be a set of files that produce the standard hud, (ready to customize)... but various files will communicate differently and allow customization of areas that don't change other things. There are a few places that, when changed, affect other HUD items that you do not want changed.
They will allow a bit more flexibility... more options with more ease.
Want to share a idea?
Are you sick of seeing your informative posts in forums disappear without a trace! Why not put them here where they can stay until you change them.
If you have some info you would like to share ... it can be anything related to dod or Half Life games and you need a bit of web space to put up a page maybe I can help.
Put your idea/pages in a email and I will consider it. If it's good enough, and of use to someone, why not share it?
I can help with editing/grammar, pictures and layout and your name not mine goes up with it. All you have to do is submit it in an email and I will put it up for you to view/change and finally approve it and make it public.
Console commands and scripting are of particular interest to me as the section I have created has not got a lot in it yet and all that is needed for an Author is to pick just one console command and write up what it does, I will put it up...your name goes on it... all that is required is an email and a good idea :)
Even if it is inside one of my Tutorials your name/email goes beside the changes if you so wish.
Get writing! I know you are out there. This site is here to stay with a lot more space yet... may as well fill it up :)

A New CVAR List...
A complete list, A to Z, can be found here... cvar list for dod:s..... UPDATED condump date 30 July 2006
The previous cvar list that was there was taken on 28 May 2006... it has been replaced. Here is what I found different after the June update... old list changes. The condump may not tell the truth sometimes... there may be a couple wrong :)
The DoD:s ClientShem.res file functions
This is a normal ClientScheme.res file... but the functions are explained within it. You may find it handy when you are trying to locate the correct place to change colors in the dods huds and screens.
NEW! 7 JULY 2006
INsanes Small HUD Ver 7 Plus Menu
See The bottom of the HUD download page for details.
Older news...
NOTE: THE RECENT UPDATE SCREWED UP THE HUDS.
I will redo all huds as soon as I can, that includes VER 4 and 5 small huds.
There are also some problems for people using the uninstaller for some huds, three anti-virus companies are reporting a trojan in the uninstaller... this is not the case, I have checked with NSIS (the installer package program) and it is a "False Positive" problem. If your anti virus reports a problem with a "Trojan.Zlob" of some type, it is more than likely a false positive, the anti-virus companies usually correct this... eventually :)
Two HUD's now work... one is a quick BETA hack job of the MOH HUD...
The other is a converted Small hud... download and pics below...
>>>>>>>Download MOH Style here. <<<<<<<
New DoD:s update looks good!

Another update... not just any update this one is more than just a couple of maps.
I am sure everyone has seen screenshots and the video of the new gameplay. You may have also noticed it has some new HUD elements.
Well... anything could happen here if you have one of my custom HUDs, it may have adverse affects or missing items.
If you do have problems just uninstall them. All my newer hud versions have an uninstaller in the add/remove section of the windows control panel ... and in the "dod" folder.
I will do some updates to the HUDs once the new release is out and see what issues there are.
Post in the forums if you have any questions. The dodbits forum does not require membership to post!
New content....
Well... old content dressed up a bit with some new stuff thrown in :)
The new Hud Tutorials are now up. There are some new pages and a seperate section for those who are new to custom huds... Helpful HUD Customizing Techniques. and Tools that make it easy.
Both New Sections and pages are here.
Another guide to using GCFScape will be added soon.
If you remember the old site, the old hud tutorials are still on-line for a while...you can go here.
Another new section has been added too, DoD:s CVARS.
This has not got a lot in it yet...working on it.
If you would like to contribute an article on CVAR's/commands or scripting in general, I would love to hear from you. I will put it up in your name/links/email of course.
Cheers

Older news...
The site went to the crapper for a while...
To all those who come to dodbits every now and again... sorry.
My website problems were an absolute pain to deal with as I am still learning to do a lot of new backend stuff. I am over most of it now and the content going in now is permanent.
The site went up and down a few times... it is stable now :)
The missing content from the old dodbits is not lost... it just needs to be done again by hand, page by page. It will all come back in about 2-4 weeks. I have a day job after all :p
I'll try and get the hud tutorials back up asap. My huds are already in the downloads section.
For the old hud tutoials you can go here.
Forums will be alive soon for people who want to drop in and make a request or whatever.
The site has a lot more space and I will expand the downloads with content that other sites may have missed.
If you want something put up that you made... ask me. I don't host movies... unless they are short tutorials.
I will add more content soon.
Cheers
