WORK IN PROGRESS NOT FINISHED added SEPTEMBER 2009
Note: discontinued... see my downloads section, much more there!
Here is a collection of Half Life 2 Map Models, Most are for Day of Defeat : Source. These are custom models and textures from various authors.
Map size to consider : Your map size will go up when you use these, wherever possible you should use the standard HL2 models and textures. The models are already installed on the users PC as standard files in the GCF file system. Take a simple bunk bed model for dod:s made by waldo, the size is 1 MB. Now if you only use it just once in the map it is a bit of a waste, consider not doing things like this. If you add a a few vehicles like a custom truck, fence, signs, you can soon climb up to 20 MB just in models, bloating your map size from 15 MB to 35 MB.
If you go custom instead of standard models make sure you use it a few times within the map or it will be a waste of download time once on the game server. Some server owners will not play your map if it is too large, what a waste, you made a great map and everyone says it is the best they have ever seen...then no one plays it on-line.
The credits are important: If you use these in a map you should make sure you credit the author for their work in your map description. I have provided the information here so when you forget you can look at a picture and connect it to a author. To make a map description just make a .TXT file with notepad that has the same name as your .BSP file and place it in the map folder. If you made a map called dod_greatmap you place the compiled .BSP in dod/maps. Make a text file and call it dod_greatmap.TXT and place it in the same folder.
Once your custom model or texture is installed in the correct place of your game directory you will see it in the model browser and the texture browser. It is very hard to tell the difference in those browsers, this is where giving credit to the author gets sticky, mappers get lazy and forget what the hell they added. I have a solution below, Pakrat.
Pakrat your custom content: Use Pakrat to pack the custom content in your map , (if not, why the hell not... are you nuts!!!?) when Pakrat adds the custom content it provides a handy list of what it added. This is when you should look at the list and jog your memory of what you used... then add the author to your description.

Revised destroyable Flak 18 (88mm AA gun) Took the opportunity to also reunwrap and reskin it to get a more up 2 date look, also because I unwrapped it in a way so I could use Ambient Occlusion to bake shadows into the texture. Would've done it earlier, but the work on RnL keeps me rather busy. The full pack now contains 2 skins (snow version), the destroyed flak and a gib (the torn off barrel). So it can be used as a destroyable objective. |
