The Server Files

In this section I will try to explain how to work with the server files.

Tools you need

You will have got some information from your Game Server provider, it will be the game server IP address and possibly a FTP address with a web based log-in control.

The first thing you will need to do is find out how to use these tools, familiarize yourself with the web based controls, you need to start and stop the server to add mods. I need not do that here... there are so many! Ask your provider. Note: if you use some web page back end controls you can upload files through it. It can give problems and corrupt files, consider using a FTP client for that task.

After you have mastered that, if you don't know what HLSW and FTP is... you better learn that first!

This handy game server browser tool can control the server remotely. It is worth the leaning curve, learn about it here . I suggest you download the version 1.2.1 at least. There are a few SourceMod plug-ins for this that expand the usage of it. Here is my take on the basic setup of HLSW.

In the “IP/Port” window paste in your full game server IP. Now in the “Name:” window click on the server, the name fills in. At this stage you will not have access to features… you have to set this up via a login to a RCON password.

Right below the IP/Port window you will se an icon with a key image… click it.
It toggles the tools in tabs, look at the lower end of the program window as it toggles the tabs on and off.

The first tab is “Rcon Config” this is where we will enter an rcon password for your servers. You will need to do this for all your servers!

In the Rcon Password box put in the password … (This password is the one that the server provider or you have set in the dod/cfg/server.cfg file)

Tick the save tick box and it will stay there.
Now press the “Get Log (internet)” button.
You will now see it refresh a lot of info’ about the server in various windows.

You can see the players Steam IDs and other info. The console tab will be running a lot of info on what is happening on the server… lots of things are now accessible. This is where you be very careful… you control the server now.
You can look through the various tabs now. You will notice lots of them require a refresh in these tabs often; some have a button for that.

The window that has all the players in is way cool. You can put lots of info in there. I would suggest you have …
Name, ID, Addr at least. These are the name Steam ID and IP address of the players. Suit your self here, just right click and add items at will.

Go through the other tabs, console, bans, the Change Maps Tab is where you can change maps. Chat is where you chat to the server. Don't forget there are addons for this browser that are very useful.

FTP

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol . What it means for doing this task is provide a way you can Upload and Download files to your game server.

This will require a program, an FTP Client, there are all sorts, free, commercial but we will stay with a free one... FileZilla.  Download the client version. To set this up so you can communicate with your game server you will need to add some details.

FileZilla uses a item called "Site Manager" It is a easy to use setup window to put username, passwords and settings for each site. The Site manager is a small Icon just below "File" in the top left corner of the window, it has a drop down arrow to connect to different sites... just double click on it now.  I will take you through that set up now... (click on the image to make it larger)

  • The little icon under “File”… press it       filezilla-window.jpg
  • Press “New Site” button. Name it.
  • Fill out the sections on each tab.
