MOTD

Now this can be easy… you can leave it alone and just go on to the next thing, doing this will allow you to add rules and all sorts of info' to tell users about your server. If you have a clan site already it can be quick!

Say I wanted to direct users right to dodbits.com. Depending on how your website works you would...

1. Make a text file called "motd.txt" put in just a http://www.dodbits.com/dods/  save it and place it in the server game folder... "dod" or "cstrike".

2. Same as above but if it does not work you should try ... http://www.dodbits.com/dods/index.htm

You see some free websites work differently so trying one or the other will see your webbie on the welcome page. Note: you may see some lag in the page going up, design the page as small and efficient as possible, small images, not a lot of info'... a fast page. I used one that was very plain... http://www.dodbits.com/boganclan/ That page loads OK and has links to the clan stuff off that if they want to go further.

If you do find it's too slow you may have to make a simple page with just your rules and a couple of links off that.

There is an option you may want… a custom “Message of the day” or MOTD as your players join. Why do this?
Well you can place a HTML page in there, or an address to a page. The page can have links that link off to other pages… you can go totally nuts here, the MOTD can be used as a browser.
It is slow. So if you do this the pages need to be as simple and quick loading as possible. Look here for a example of a game server MOTD running on an external page.
That is a complex set with all kinds of stuff in it for my clan. It could be just a set of rules and no images. You need to know a bit about HTML to do this. However, if you do you can replace the HTML in the dod/motd.txt to point to a page. My motd.txt has this in it…
motd
That points to the correct address and displays the page. (old motd address in that pic) Or you can place some simple HTML in there and just have it on your game server.
If you are going to do this and don’t know HTML you may want to use a WYSIWYG editor. I recommend a free one… KompoZer
If you test the pages in game at a resolution of 600 x 480 they will suit all your visitors screens. Do not make these pages big; keep the images and page sizes as small as possible!
