INsanes Hud and GUI Ver11 for LINUX was created by INsane
I now have Linux installed, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32 bit.
I installed the experimental AMD driver and the MS fonts for Linux, (do the manual install it is better 3. Manual Installation )

So... installing was best on a dedicated drive I boot into, found a 250GIG SATA spare drive, unplugged my Windows 7 drive so it would not do damage to my master boot record... it almost always does if you do something wrong.

My ASUS motherboard has a boot choice on start by pressing F8...if I don't press it windows boots up automatically.

After all that, installing steam was best just going to the web site and downloading the .deb file to install steam.

So after all that steam is on OK, works fine, dods booted up OK.
I installed my hud files in to custom/INsanes_HUD .... it did not work.
What does work is when I place files in the dod folder ...like we used to do.

I have a feeling the gameinfo.txt is not correct for Linux .

Please DO NOT download the files below if you are uncomfortable with game folder directories, these are for Linux tests for nominated persons... you have been warned, You can download... there is a small risk they will not work.

So, I have been busy but booted back in Ubuntu.

I found quite a few disturbing bugs. Fonts are....well shit compared to windows.

Also, custom content in the custom folder will not work without changes to the gameinfo.txt.

So there are a few issues, I will post some working files soon.

Fonts:

You may have already installed Microsoft fonts to "fix" this, please recheck. Some of the installs you find ariound the net are missing one font used in the game files... Tahhoma.

vassie.me/installing-microsoft-core-font...ing-tahoma-on-ubuntu

After making the file from the instructions and installing I could open up Libre Office Writer and select all the missing Microsoft Fonts. Including the Tahhoma font missing in a few other fixes.

The Tutorial on that page is repeated here I have added some notes on extra steps...

Installing Microsoft core fonts (including Tahoma) on Ubuntu
Posted on 28 November 2012

(by Ben Vassie )

After installing Kubuntu, one of the first things I do is install the Microsoft core fonts, this greatly improves font rendering when web browsing, however the widely used Tahoma font is not included. Thankfully trentscott over at the Ubuntu forums has put together a script to download the core fonts with Tahoma and install them.

Create a new file called addfonts.sh and paste in the code below
Note: Desktop is fine for a location to make a new file, right click "Create New Document" - "Empty Document"
#!/bin/bash
# Install Microsoft Fonts (Including Tahoma)

if [ "$(id -u)" == "0" ]
then
if apt-get install msttcorefonts; then
mkdir temp-tahomafont
cd temp-tahomafont
if wget http://download.microsoft.com/download/ie6sp1/finrel/6_sp1/W98NT42KMeXP/EN-US/IELPKTH.CAB; then
cabextract IELPKTH.CAB
if cp *.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/; then
if fc-cache -fv; then
cd ..
rm -r temp-tahomafont
echo "Microsoft fonts are now installed"
else
echo "Could not rebuild font cache"
exit -1
fi
else
echo "Could not copy the font to /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/"
exit -1
fi
else
echo "Could not download Tahoma font"
exit -1
fi
else
echo "Could not install msttcorefonts package"
exit -1
fi
else
echo "Run 'sudo ./addfonts.sh'"
exit 0
fi

Save it, call it "addfonts.sh" if you have not done so alredy.

Next: Make it executable

Bring up Terminal with keyboard shortcut CTRL+ALT+T
Change directory by typing this in terminal...
cd Desktop
Then place this in Terminal...
chmod +x addfonts.sh
Press enter.

Next: Then run it (via sudo) to download and install the Microsoft Core Fonts with Tahoma

Place this in Terminal...
sudo ./addfonts.sh
Press enter.

By the way... don't post this fix in the steam forums. Tahoma font may have issues VALVe may not be comfortable talking about.

Still looking into all the issues playing Linux and with custom HUD's .

It is still quite a mess playing on Linux, video card drivers are obviously a disappointment.
I have tried quite a few Linux distros now and I think the best is still Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32 bit.

Fonts ... OMG lots.
1. They are too small.
2. If you have a custom font the naming is very important, not only the name of the file but also the postscript names. Capitals in file and postscript names are a big issue!
3. Placing a .ttf file in a .vpk package is bad, related to the issue above but with more errors.

Custom files in general.
1. You cannot get files in the custom folder to work. The only way at the moment is to edit the gameinfo.txt file .

Other than that it seems to work right away without too much effort ... IF you use ... Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32 bit and if you enable the "experimental" display drivers in the "additional drivers" section.

It has a long way to go yet but with a good spec system and a decent video card you can get high FPS and play just like the widows version.

That... is amazing and quite an accomplishment for the VALVe developers.

Hi, INsane. Been a while, I'm not certain if you remember me; I did the mini-right HUD with you a few years ago. Your linux instructions worked perfectly for me (I use PCLinux, however, not Ubuntu) and I wanted to say thanks for providing it. May I use it to make another mini-right HUD?

Hi, INsane. I'd like to make a go of this again. Can you make your Linux HUD available?

Thanks.
